Civic Education Area

At Utah Law-Related Education, our civic education initiatives equip students with the knowledge, skills, and dispositions to think critically, engage thoughtfully, and participate meaningfully in public life.

Our work is centered on three primary areas. We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution engages students in an inquiry-based study of constitutional principles, culminating in simulated congressional hearings that build critical thinking, evidence-based argumentation, and civil discourse. Civic Discovery offers selected classrooms an experiential field learning opportunity at places where civics happens—such as courts, government institutions, and civic organizations—connecting classroom learning to real-world systems. We also provide professional learning for educators, including standards-aligned training, classroom-ready resources, and USBE licensure credit as an approved provider, in partnership with schools, universities, and civic organizations across Utah.

Our 2026 We the People State Champions

Each year, Utah’s We the People state competition highlights the power of civic education in action—bringing students beyond the classroom and into meaningful engagement with the Constitution.

In 2026, Fort Herriman Middle School earned first place in the junior high division, demonstrating exceptional preparation, teamwork, and constitutional understanding.

At the high school level, Green Canyon High School was named state champion, delivering a compelling and sophisticated performance that exemplified the highest standards of civic learning.

These students—and the educators who support them—represent what is possible when young people are given the opportunity to think critically, speak thoughtfully, and engage deeply with the principles of American democracy.
